ALTRINCHAM BRIDGE CLUB --
JULY 2009
A COMEDY OF ERRORS
I have extracted two items from the latest copy of Mr Bridge, both concerning Directing.
1. South was dealer in 4 spades, with a 5-3 fit. He played 3 rounds of trumps & both defenders discarded on the 3rd round ( where is the 13th trump? ). A little later, West ruffed a heart & in doing so, also cut South off from several winning hearts in dummy.
Dummy immediately said that West had revoked & the players all turned over their quitted cards to prove the point. West agreed he had revoked & called the Director.
The Director was a playing Director & he came over once he had finished his hand,
but he said that he could not look at the board because he had yet to play it.
Errors made :-
a) Dummy is only allowed to point out revokes at the end of play of the hand. The Director should warn dummy.
b) The players are not allowed to turn over quitted cards.
c) The playing Director should come as soon as called to the table.
d) The playing Director should deal with the problem, even if he cannot then play the board as a result
2. With 6 cards left, declarer (South) claimed the rest of the tricks. 9
East claimed a trick because he still had a trump (a Club). Declarer -
Said that however the play went, he would always make the last 6 tricks 8 7 6 5
The Director , however, awarded East a trick because of his trump. Q 7
- (East)
A K Q J
Error made :- K
(South)
It is not true that a defender with an unmentioned trump gets a trick automatically. Since East must follow suit throughout, there is no way he can take a trick. So declarer gets all his 6 tricks.
